This is a welcome addition to the available collaborations between Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt. Recorded during a performance for The Left Bank Jazz Society, it features some good spirited tenor wailing by the pair who each also have a solo feature.

Genre ~ Hard-Bop, Saxophone | Label ~ Prestige The focus of this exciting, if imperfect, CD is a reunion of Gene "Jug" Ammons and Sonny Stitt, who were responsible for some of the most famous tenor saxophone battles of the s and early '50s. When the two locked horns, it was musical sportsmanship at its finest.

He was given the nickname 'Jug' by Eckstine, reportedly because the hats which the band were supposed to wear were too small for him. Ammons had his first hit 'Red Top' in and set up several jazz combination groups from onwards featuring musicians such as Miles Davis and Sonny Stitt.
